Registration Now Open for 2014-15 Bridge Math Team

Math TeamThe Math Team is a PTA sponsored activity that gives 4th & 5th grade students an opportunity to prepare for and participate in the monthly Math Olympiad (Division E - Elementary) contest. Although we bear the name Math “Team,” individual achievement and improvement are emphasized.

Enrollment this year is limited to 23 students who are current Bridge School 4th or 5th graders.

Please note that there are extracurricular math enrichment programs that also participate in the Math Olympiad (e.g., The Math Club, LYCAL, selected Russian Math School programs). Math Olympiad rules state that students may only take the contest once each month. Therefore if your student is participating in the Math Olympiad (Division E) with another program, they cannot also take the contest with the Bridge Math Team.

The Math Olympiad meets twice a month from October through March from 3:15-4:45 pm.

  • CONTEST: On contest days, the MO contest is given at the beginning of our meeting. After a short break, solutions are reviewed immediately while parent volunteers grade the contests.
  • PRACTICE: Smaller groups (roughly 4 students) work with a small group coach on practice problems and commonly needed mathematical concepts. These practice meetings are optional. However, the first practice meeting is required for all registered students.

All contests and practice meetings will take place at Bridge School, Room 3 (Mr. Garland’s room).

The cost for this year is $65 which covers supplies and fees and includes the cost of the new practice bookMOEMS Contest Problems Volume 3. If you already have the book (in print September 2014), then please contact Angela Chang.

Students are expected to practice independently at home (the once a month practice session isn’t enough practice to keep improving on the monthly contest!).

Since solutions are reviewed immediately following the contest, students are expected not to discuss questions or solutions with other students or friends who may be taking the Math Olympiad on a later day.

Students are also expected to keep the same behavior standards afte school regarding parent volunteers/coaches and taking care of the classroom as they do during the school day.

The MO organization does not allow makeup contests. Any missed contests, whether due to do sickness or other reasons, cannot be made up at any other time or place.

The practice sessions are optional. Attendance is not required.

Registration is online on a first-come, first-served basis. Once you have registered, bring in the $65 registration fee in an envelope to the Math Team box in the front lobby. Make checks payable to “Bridge PTA.”

The roster tends to fill up quickly. A waiting list will be kept and students contacted as space is made available.
