Community Service

Josiah Bridge School is a energetic and generous environment, with many diverse opportunities for community service. We are committed to having a positive impact and giving back.

With that goal in mind, there are three major activities during the school year: food collection for the Lexington Food Pantry, a gift drive for families during the winter holidays and a dinner at Bristol Lodge in Waltham. Beyond these annual scheduled events, there are many more opportunities throughout the year to volunteer. Please check your monthly Bridge To Home newletter and keep an eye out for special announcements for more opportunities to serve. We can always use your help.

The Community Service Committee is currently co-chaired by Julia Carpenter-Conlin, Kris Maeda and Amy McGaraghan.

Within the Bridge Community

Each year at the holiday season we reach out to families within the Bridge Community that need our support. Privately, we provide gift cards for food, clothing, and other items. Please think about donating a gift card to help a Bridge family in need at holiday time. Suggested stores for gift cards are Target, Stop and Shop, Toys R Us, etc. Any dollar amount is appreciated. This neighbor-to-neighbor service can have a dramatic impact on a child.

Giving at holiday-time is a unique experience. We feel our own humanity and connection to other families, and we help our kids understand the importance of reaching out.

Beyond the Bridge Community

Bridge School is one of the few remaining schools with a "one-to-one" relationship with families in need. We are fortunate to have a very special seven-year-plus relationship with the Thom Anne Sullivan Child Center in Lowell, MA. We have great respect for the work they do on behalf of families and children. Sadly, with each year, the number of families in need continues to grow.

You can make a difference. Your family can be matched with a needy family affiliated with the Thom Anne Sullivan Center. You will receive a "gift assignment": a number of parents and children, their ages, and perhaps a few preferences. Then you go do the shopping to make a holiday happen for that family. It's a real commitment -- with real results! Last year, we delivered gifts to more than 150 homeless and at-risk children and mothers. With your help we hope to connect with even more families this year at holiday time.

Dinner at Bristol Lodge

Each spring Bridge School students and families cook and serve dinner to patrons at the Bristol Lodge in Waltham, a soup kitchen that serves about 80 men and women each evening.

In addition to the meal, we also provide fruit for the men and women to take with them. Bridge families can participate by picking up a bag of oranges, apples, bananas or a box of clementines while on a routine trip to the supermarket. We generally collect enough fresh produce so that all the patrons leave with a few pieces of fruit, which is greatly appreciated. Information about this opportunity for service will be available in the spring of 2016.
